Da Nang City Guide
Cultural Spots
The Danang Cathedral (known locally as the Con Ga Church) was built by French citizens during 1923. Its architecture and interior reflect the European influence that is prevalent throughout Vietnam. Its most unique attraction is the weathercock that sits upon the top of its steeple. At present, the cathedral has a community of over 4000 and holds Mass from Monday to Saturday. Due to its large size, all must stand during this service.
The Cao Dai Temple is a unique attraction that has many tourists flocking to the establishment. The building was constructed in 1956 and has a sign at the front of the altar which says Van Giao Nhat Ly (meaning ‘all religions have the same reason’). The Temple is filled with pictures of the founders of the main religions – Mohammed, Lao Tse, Jesus, Budha and Confucius. Prayers are held four times a day; the temple is open to visitors so make sure to respect the people that are there to worship.
Natural Attractions in Da Nang
The Hai Van Pass is the highest walkway in the entire country and enables you to view expanses of Vietnamese forestry. The name translates as ‘pass of the ocean cloud’ and you really do walk high in the sky as the pass is 1500 km above sea level. It really is worth walking along this path as you can see Da nang City, Son Tra Peninsula and Tien Sa Port from the peak.
You will find the Marble Mountains 12 kilometres west from central Da Nang. The caves within the limestone outcrops were previously used as both Buddhist temples and Vietcong hideouts. You may want to visit the Non Nuoc Arts Village whilst you are in the mountains. Locals construct marble art that illustrates the ancient temples and pagodas that are dotted around the village.
Beaches in Da Nang
There are an abundance of exquisite beaches within Da Nang. The sea is perfect for swimming between the months of May and August as there are few waves and the temperature is warm. However it is important that you only swim between 5am and 8pm as these are the times when the beach guard team are at work. All beaches offer tourists a variety of activities; these include diving, yachting, water-skiing and fishing. The Nam O Beach is popular with tourists as it is surrounded by the lush greenery of the Marble Mountains. The My Khe Beach is well liked by both citizens and tourists as it is close to the popular restaurants and hotels, and offers beach and water activities for all ages.
