There are plenty of cultural experiences to soak up due to the range of museums, galleries and art houses. You can also enjoy such urban past times as shopping, relaxing in beer gardens and dining at a range of restaurants. There are also a number of activities like skiing and surfing for those who want a lively break away.

Parks and Gardens

There are a number of great parks to walk around within Munich; the English Garden is popular with both tourists and locals. You can stroll or cycle through the paths and enjoy views across expanses of green lawns and glittering waters. There is also a beer garden within the park – perfect for a relaxing drink in an exquisite setting.

The Hofgarten is the most central garden within Munich, this makes it perfect for all those who may have spent the day sightseeing and shopping in the central areas. This was created in the 17th century and has a true Renaissance feel; you can enjoy walks along the walkways shaded by trees whilst marvelling at the baroque style. There are also many other great gardens – these include the New and Old Botanical Garden, Nymphenburg Park and the Olympic Park.

Cultural Attractions

There are an abundance of cultural spots  dotted around Munich; it is best to pick and choose those attractions which will suit your holiday. The Marienplatz has existed within Munich’s central square since 1198. It was once a marketplace where corn was the main produce sold. The establishment is close to many other popular sites, so is great for those on a sightseeing day out.

The Olympic Tower located in the Olympic Park should be visited by those who are not afraid of heights. An escalator takes you to the top of the structure where you can enjoy expansive views across the entire city; you may also be able to see the Alps on a clear day. There is also a restaurant at the top of the tower for those who get hungry on the way up.

Sightseeing & Churches

The churches within Munich have become tourist must-sees due to their exquisite designs and exteriors.  Asamkirche was created by the famous design brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam between 1733 and 1746. This was a small private church and showcases some great examples of the brothers’ personal and unusual tastes.

You may also want to visit Frauenkirche; the copper gilded domes are quite a sight as they are the second largest towers in all of Munich. The church contains a mix of both Renaissance and Gothic styles due to the renovations and revivals that the building has undergone as a result of the Second World War. Whilst the design may be simple, its vast size is something that is sure the take the breath of every visitor.

St. Peter’s Church is the oldest and most popular cathedral within all of Munich; it was built in the 11th century in order to replace an old wooden building. However the church was pulled down and rebuilt in 1294; this occurred again in the 14th century and resulted in the building having a great Gothic style. In 1630, there was an extension added in a Renaissance design – there is a great mix of styles and architecture for visitors to feast their eyes upon.
