Rome City Guide
Rome is a spot on many people’s wish list of holiday destinations. The historical resonance of the city makes it an interesting place to visit whilst the bustling atmosphere means you are never far from activity. This is an excellent place if you want a jam-packed holiday of sights and cultural insight.
Popular Tourist Attractions
One of the most famous sights within Rome is the Colosseum, whose vast size is an overwhelming presence in the city. This size reflects the historical richness of the monument which saw large audiences enjoy gladiator displays of battle and death. The ticket price is 8 Euros allowing you to catch unique exhibitions which take place within the interior. However if you do not wish to spend money, you can tour the outside and still feel the grand atmosphere of the building.
Other popular attractions are the Catacombs of Rome. There are five within the city and are all quite similar so it is worth only visiting one. You will receive a guided tour which teaches you the history regarding the burial places. Whilst you may only see the minimum proportion of the tunnel-system, it is well worth a visit in order to gain an interesting experience into Christianity’s history.
Parks and Gardens
Rome also has many luscious outdoor attractions for those wishing to escape the bustle of the city. Open between May and June, the Roseto Comunale opens its doors in order to exhibit its extensive collection of Roses. As well as the wide range of colourful and scented flowers, the garden also offers evening entertainment during the summer so you can relax into the nighttime. Other great gardens to visit are the Orto Botanico to see the exotic plants on show and the Valley of the Caffarella where the landscape is dotted with old ruins.
Travelling around
The main company ATAC use combined tickets which cover a wide range of public transport making it easier for travelers to reach their desired destination. A ticket (called a BIT) costs 1 Euro for 75 minutes, 5 Euros for 1 day and 11 Euros for 3 days. The highest rate is the monthly 30 Euro ticket. Tickets can be bought around most places; bars, newsstands as well as the ticket machines at the stations. For an adventure you could also hire a Vespa and travel around Rome in the typical style with your own freedom at hand. There can be plenty of traffic on the roads, which is also something to be aware of if hiring a bike as part of the Roma’n’Bike scheme. It is inadvisable to drive a car in Italy if you desire an easy holiday due to the lack of parking, restricted zones and many one-way roads. Many central sights and monuments can be reached on foot which also allows you to enjoy the Rome experience as well as spot sights you may otherwise miss when in transport (as many streets cannot be reached by vehicles).
Rome has great cultural richness meaning it is a hotspot for tourist attraction through its monuments, parks and museums. However due to being a bustling area and having many tourists descend upon it, it is advisable to understand the transport and ways of getting around.
