Calgary is one of the youngest cities within Canada and has grown greatly due to the oil boom in the 1970s. The city is continuing to develop so has plenty to offer to its visitors.  There are plenty of exquisite and unique buildings as well as bridges which provide you with views across the Elbow and Bow Rivers. As well as urban activities and entertainments you can also find galleries and museums which allow you to delve into Calgary’s young history.

Tourist Attractions

Calgary still has a few top tourist spots despite the fact that it is quite a new city. The Olympic Plaza was built for the presentation of medals during the 1988 Olympic Games. The main attraction is a wading pool which turns into a skating rink during the winter months. The establishment also has a lot of events and festivals taking place within it walls throughout the year. There are large festivals, music concerts and other live performances which you can book to visit.

Another top destination to visit is the Calgary Tower which is an observatory and planetarium. The building is breath-taking as it stands at 650 feet high and looms across the entire city. The Calgary Tower is also spectacular on the inside as you are able to enjoy panoramic views across the whole of Calgary and the Rocky Mountains. There is also a restaurant at the top of the building which enables you to eat exquisite food whilst looking out at great scenes of Canada.

A unique attraction which is perfect for those beer lovers who come to Calgary is the Big Rock Brewery. This is the city’s most loved brewery as it uses high quality malt parley to produce top tasting beers. You can view the process of brewing and creating beers by going on tours around the establishment. You can also book a tasting session at the end of this tour which enables you to try all the different beers on offer.

Museums and Galleries

There is still culture and history seeping through Calgary’s streets and establishments regardless of the fact that it is a new city. The Art Gallery of Calgary exhibits regional and local contemporary artwork upon its walls. There are a range of different styles with themes and ideas that relate to the city, the country and the entire population.

The Glenbow Museum looks at the short history of the city. There are over 20 permanent galleries as well as special annual displays which attract both tourists and locals alike. Here you can look at artefacts and antiques from the First Nations of Calgary as well as collections of ancient Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. You can also view the military collection which displays the armours, swords and weaponry of Canada’s past soldiers.

Festivals and Events

Calgary has a wide array of festivals and events which take place throughout the year. Canada Day, which is on the 1^st of July, is celebrated in many different areas with live music, food stalls and fireworks. The Stampede is another popular event within July as there are 10 days of performances by cowboys and rodeo athletes. Many people also descend upon Calgary in June for the Calgary Jazz Festival as there are many top end performers playing on a variety of stages for 9 whole days.
