Melbourne offers its visitors a wide variety of activities and sites as it is the second largest city in Australia. It is known as Australia’s cultural capital due to its many shopping malls, theatres and galleries. City Centre

The City Centre attracts many visitors as it is jam-packed with things to do and see. The Docklands is a brand new precinct which contains shops, bars and cafes. Its waterside setting means it provides its visitors with a stress-free day out as you can relax and enjoy the views across the glistening water. Another bustling area to visit is Southgate which is a promenade in Yarra and contains bars and restaurants which provide you with views across the water. You can also make a pilgrimage to the area on Sunday where there is an art and crafts market to explore.

There are also a few museums which enable you to delve into Melbourne’s history. The Immigration Museum on Flinders Street tells the story of the individuals who moved to Australia from all across the world. You may also wish to visit the Police Museum where there are over 150 years worth of stories and displays which centre on crime, justice and courage.

Carlton

Carlton contains many historical sites which will inform you of Melbourne’s heritage. The Melbourne Museum is the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere and contains seven galleries as well as a temporary exhibit gallery which always offers interesting knowledge of the area. Lygon and Rathdowne Street are crammed with Italian heritage where you can enjoy the restaurants and coffee shops which offer great hospitality and an excellent atmosphere. In Carlton, you can also enjoy the Carlton Gardens which is an UNESCO World Heritage site and contains exotic flowers and plant life.

St Kilda

This is an area which is popular with backpackers and young travellers due to the nightlife which goes on into the early mornings. Alongside the clubs, the St Kilda Botanical Garden contains many exotic plants and is great for a relaxing stroll during the daytime hours. You may also wish to walk along the St Kilda Esplanade which has a market on Sundays where you can purchase some great bargains.  Luna Park is great for thrill seekers as the amusement park contains a range of exciting rides and amusements.

Alongside the areas which are pinpointed within this article, there are also many more places to explore within Melbourne. You may wish to visit the botanical gardens in South Yarra, the markets in Prahran and Northern Melbourne which is home to the Woodlands Historic Park.
