Wellington City Guide

The city of Wellington provides its visitors with memories that will never be forgotten as there are an abundance of attractions and experience for tourists to enjoy.  There are a number of museums and historical buildings which allow you to delve into the history of Wellington and its citizens. The city also has many modern attractions; you can enjoy the restaurants, bars and evening entertainments as well as the parks and gardens which are dotted around the city.

Museums

Wellington has numerous museums which showcase the city’s rich and extensive history. The Cable Car Museum is an award winning establishment which tells the story of Wellington’s iconic cable cars. There are displays of the original grip cars which have been renovated to their past condition. You can also view the winding machinery which was once used to move the cars throughout a maze of tunnels.

The Te Papa Museum is Wellington’s oldest and most popular museum. The exhibitions are continually changing meaning that all displays are fresh and new. These collections can be very diverse; however there will tend to be some exhibitions which are linked to New Zealand and its past. This is also a great place to bring children as there are a number of interactive activities and games for them to enjoy.

Parks and Wildlife

The Wellington Botanic Garden is an expansive area of plush greenery. There are intricacy designed gardens where the flowers are bold in scent and colour. There are also many different areas to walk within; these include the Duck Pond, the award winning Lady Norwood Rose Garden and the Begonia House. There is also a play area for children as well as the historical Bolton Street Memorial Park which documents aspects of Wellington’s past.

The Otari-Wilton Bush Native Botanic Garden takes you back into a prehistoric world. There are bridges which take you along the rooftops of Wellington’s forests and trails which allow you to hike within the masses of trees. This is the only botanic garden within New Zealand which is solely dedicated to native plants. There are large areas which regenerate and conserve New Zealand plants and sections where staff collect seeds for scientific explorations and testing.

Family Activities

Zoos are the ideal place to take the family as all members are sure to enjoy observing exotic creatures. Wellington Zoo is a great place of learning and discovery as the establishment ensures that visitors understand their animals. The Nest allows customers to enhance their knowledge as they are able to peer into surgery rooms and feeding area and learn about how the zoo cares for its creatures.  A large attraction at the establishment is Tahi the one-legged Kiwi; each day the staff will answer your questions on the species and the crippled animal. Visitors are also able to prepare meals for the larger animals – during this time the staff will teach you about the creatures and their daily needs.
