Frommer's Dollar A Day Travel Guides
Frommer's Dollar A Day travel guides are time-tested budget travel books that go back decades. While Let's Go, Rough and Lonely Planet are budget travel guides aimed mainly at the youthful traveler, the Dollar A Day books are called budget travel books for grown-ups who want to be comfortable and yet travel inexpensively.
These helpful books list hotels as well as affordable places to eat that the locals also favor. Each guide is loaded with detailed listings for hotels, bed & breakfast inns, guesthouses, bistros and ethnic restaurants. Exact prices are given.
There are shopping tips for bargain hunters and places for those who like to experience the local nightlife. There are also tips on plenty of other fun things to do that don't cost a lot of money.
There's information on planning affordable trips and notes on when you might want to splurge. There are suggestions for scenic drives and nature walks as well as information about outdoor activities like golfing and fishing.
Maps are in black, white and red. There's a color map at the back of each book.
Frommer's Dollar A Day travel guides are not for backpackers who want to "rough" it, or for those on a really tight budget. The Dollar A Day books are for those who want good, authentic meals at affordable prices and places to stay that have some creature comforts. Remember, though, that not everyone agrees with what Frommer's calls "affordable." Some of the "inexpensive" places still seem pricey.
While exact prices are given, these can, of course, change. So be aware that some hotel and restaurant information may be outdated.
Also, directions given might not be very specific. You may want to check several sources on a hotel or restaurant to verify information about price, location, hours and quality of service.
There aren't a lot of maps in these travel guides. Those that are in the book give only a general idea about locations. Check out our maps section for ideas on more detailed maps you might want to carry with you.
