Sightseeing is truly a great way to take in your surroundings while you holiday. As a tourist in Italy, there is of course some great architecture around the whole country and often, what to do first and where to go can be mind boggling. If you’re thinking of getting a little closer to Italian nature, you may think Venice (lots of history on the water), Lake Como or the coast ofSardinia – all fantastic places to visit, and all are places that are steeped in history. Talking architecture alone though, Italy has some of the most stunning buildings; The Colosseum, The Pantheon or the Roman Forum are all situated in the heart of Italy – Rome. The styles of architecture around the country have influenced other countries. It is common to see where British architects have taken inspiration from large exaggerated Roman buildings that were first created in Italy. The Church of San Spirito was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and built in the 1400’s – this is just one example of a building that was designed to be light on exterior decoration, yet stunning and elegant inside. As well as many other buildings in the area, like the Palazzo Strozzi or San Lorenzo,The Church helps to put Florence on the list as part of a sightseeing visit to Italy. The opulent Baroque style that came about around the 1600’s in Southern Italy, can be spotted in Milan, for those that want to take a trip away from the popular Tuscan region. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele was designed by Giuseppe Mengoni and built in the city from 1865 to 1877.
Lots of fine architecture can be found in the presence of the city of Vicenza where you can see the imposing town palace, or Piazza Thiene, which sits in the centre of the city. This city is full of Roman villas, castles, churches and monuments which alone make Vicenzaone of the places we recommend. And if the cities we have mentioned aren’t quite enough for one trip, the symmetrical Villa Foscari which was designed by Andrea Palladio in the mid 1500’s can be viewed along the banks of the Riviera del Brenta in Malcontenta in the Venice region – easily accessed from the Veneto region in which Vicenza is located. There are lots of hotels and places to stay in the cities we have mentioned, making a sightseeing trip to see the great architecture of Italy a must-see.
